RURAL ENERGY FOR AMERICA PROGRAM (REAP)

Renewable Energy Systems and Energy Efficiency Loans & Grants

USDA REAP grants can help farmers and agriculture producers significantly reduce their energy costs by funding solar installations. This investment in renewable energy not only saves money in the long run but also demonstrates environmental stewardship, enhancing a farm’s reputation and sustainability.

What does this program do?

  • The program provides guaranteed loan financing and grant funding to agricultural producers and rural small businesses for renewable energy systems or to make energy efficiency improvements.
  • Agricultural producers can also apply for new energy-efficient equipment and new system loans for agricultural production and processing.

Who can apply?

  • Agricultural producers with at least 50 percent of their gross income coming from agricultural operations
  • Small businesses in eligible rural areas

What types of borrowers are eligible?

  • Eligible borrowers include:
    Rural small businesses
  • Agricultural producers Additional USDA Rural Development programs that support other types of businesses and organizations are included in the OneRD Guarantee Loan Initiative.

This is great news for those considering solar power.

The USDA REAP Grant has been significantly boosted for 2024, now covering up to half of your solar installation costs. This means that when you combine this grant with other incentives like the 30% Solar Investment Tax Credit and various add-ons, local and utility grants, and bonus depreciation, you can potentially cover 90% or more of your solar installation costs. This can make going solar much more affordable and accessible for many people.

Why Solar Power?

Reduced energy costs: Solar panels generate clean electricity, significantly reducing reliance on the grid and lowering electricity bills. This can be a major cost-saving factor for farms, which often have high energy demands for irrigation, lighting, and equipment operation.

Sustainability: By generating clean, renewable energy, farms can reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to environmental sustainability. This can be particularly important for farms seeking to demonstrate their commitment to responsible practices and attract environmentally conscious consumers.
